Top 10 Do's and Don'ts in Egypt

• Do not take photos without asking for permission
  
  • Taking photos without permission could cause lots of trouble in Egypt, especially when you are at famous attractions, such as the pyramids. One ‘trap’ that happens a lot is taking a photo of camels in front of the pyramids without getting permission and then having to pay for the shots or delete them all when the owner turns up.
• Don’t Wear Shorts and Sleeveless T-Shirts
  
  • As a traveler, don’t wear vests or any tops without sleeves in Egypt (except as underwear). Exposing any of your torso is a no-no so nothing low-cut should be worn. Normal T-shirts and shirts are fine. Similarly, all trousers and skirts should fully cover the legs or at least be 3/4 length to be respectful in Egypt.
• Pack Modest Clothes and Do not show the soles of your feet
  
  • Long, loose, opaque clothing that covers all the key areas (shoulders, chest, belly, upper arms, and legs to the knee) is the way forward, while many find sunglasses help avoid unwanted eye contact. Women will want to bring a shawl or scarf to cover their hair while visiting the mosque.

  • Most Egyptians are religious in some shape or form, and disrespecting Islam can cause huge offense—although the country’s blasphemy laws tend to be used against internal dissidents, not irritating tourists. Complaining about the volume of the call to prayer or dressing disrespectfully for the mosque are obvious no-nos, as is offering alcohol unless you know someone drinks it.

• Avoid Flashy Displays: Refrain from displaying expensive jewellery, gadgets, or designer items in public, as this can attract unwanted attention.
• Use Reliable Transportation: Opt for reputable and licensed transportation services, especially when arriving at the airport or traveling around the city.
• Online Security: Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for accessing sensitive information or making online transactions. Use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data.
•  Backup Important Documents: Make photocopies or digital scans of your passport, visa, credit cards, and other important documents. Store them separately from the originals.

• Going out alone:  Stick with your group of friends rather than heading off anywhere alone as you could get lost or find yourself in trouble and needing help.

• Taking part in physical activity like sports or swimming: You are more likely to become dehydrated, leaving you feeling unwell. Also, you won’t feel as energetic because of how the alcohol affects your body. You may also be more likely to hurt yourself.
• Driving Under the Influence: Never drive if you’ve consumed alcoholic drinks. Use public transportation, a designated driver, or a ride-sharing service instead.
